We’d all assumed as much ourselves but now it’s official – the upcoming Sherlock special will be set in Victorian times. A Victorian Sherlock Holmes – whatever will they think of next!
As revealed by Entertainment Weekly, co-creator Steven Moffat has said that: ‘the special is its own thing. We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Fellow creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be a separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.’
So there we have it. Will this one-off have any ties to the main show – is it a dream? Is it time travel? Do Sherlock and John find out their ancestors were detectives too?
While it has not been confirmed, it looks like we will only have to wait a few months more to find out. The special is, according to Moffat, ‘pretty much finished’ and it is largely believed that this very unusual episode is to air in the UK this December.
