Breaking Down The Sherlock Series Four Trailer

Mycroft Exiled

Reptile

Whatever is causing it, there is a serious rift forming between Sherlock’s gang. Not only is Molly angry with Sherlock, a shocking scene in the trailer sees the usually jovial Mrs Hudson kick Mycroft out of her house, calling him a “reptile.” The pair haven’t exactly seen eye-to-eye in the past, but not to this scale. What has Mycroft done to deserve banishment from Baker Street? Is it something to do with that secret notebook he was compiling in ‘The Abominable Bride’?

Demons beneath the road

Moftiss have also promised that some big questions will be answered this series and that some long-running plotlines will be tied up. Mycroft’s ominous voiceover would seem to hit at one of these. Here’s what he says:

“The roads we walk have demons beneath, and yours have been waiting for a very long time.”

Assuming that he is talking to his brother, this suggests to us that we will be delving somewhat into Sherlock’s past. Perhaps we will find out what made him the man he is today, as was hinted at in ‘The Abominable Bride.’ But what demons are waiting beneath Sherlock’s feet, and will they show themselves this series?

Miss him?

Moriarty

Playing over Mycroft’s dialogue is a brief shot of the back of someone’s head, surrounded by security guards, walking along a beach. It’s fairly innocuous on its own, but look a little closer at the scene and it seems that a potentially big reveal is hidden in plain sight. Who does that look like to you?

It’s him, isn’t it? There’s no mistaking that hair, those ears and the distinctive dress sense. If it is, though, is this a Mind Palace scene? Or did he survive a bullet to the brain, after all? If he did, he’s definitely learnt to backcomb…

“Keep me informed”

Mycroft

After all this action and heartache, the trailer finishes with something reassuring. Suddenly the characters seem back to their old selves, as Sherlock and Mycroft share a bit of their usual banter inside the elder’s office. Clearly, Series Four is not going to be an entirely serious affair, and will still retain the trademark Sherlock snappy dialogue and fun tone. Phew!

(Probably) only six more months, guys. We can do it!

  1. Love the trailer! Is amazing! Feeling very thrilled for the up-and-coming series, even more so thanks to the trailer. Shame we have to wait 6 months approx. (glares at Steven and Mark and yells, “I love you two, but less of a wait, please!”) I know the last, light-hearted part of the trailer off by heart and join in with it whenever I watch it. *cough* All the time. *cough* My is literally pounding when I see/hear Mrs Hudson talking all angry like that at Mycroft. (Hugs Mycroft and Sherlock and whispers, “I’ll help you through this, I promise.” The Holmes Boys don’t seem pleased!)
