9. Robert Stephens
Robert Stephens is an unusually effete but often hilarious Holmes in the terrific The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, which aims to explore the Holmes beyond Dr Watson’s fictions. Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have named the film as one of their number one influences on Sherlock.
8. Ian McKellen
Ian McKellen (AKA Gandalf, alias Magneto) was the most recent movie Sherlock Holmes in 2015’s Mr Holmes, a movie which saw an elderly Sherlock recalling an old case as his once-great memory fades. McKellen gives a very moving performance as a Holmes made fallible with old age.
7. Peter Cushing
Peter Cushing played a number of iconic roles in his career (Van Helsing, Dr Frankenstein, Star Wars‘s Grand Moff Tarkin) – and Sherlock Holmes, of course. He took over from Douglas Wilmer in the 1960s TV series, and starred in 1958’s The Hound of the Baskervilles and 1984’s The Mask of Death.
